Did you know that feeding ducks bread could actually be harmful to them? Well what should you feed them? Try these alternative ideas and keep your duck friends happy and healthy.
- Sweet corn. This costs about 60p and comes from a tin. Ducks love a bit of sweet corn- and so do coots- so you’ll probably end up feeding the whole canal.
- Peas. What about a handful of defrosted peas- you know the ones you get from the supermarket that come frozen? These are so good for ducks and you’ll really be helping them out with their five a day!
- Rice. Uncooked or cooked. You can even give a handful of your rice leftovers.
I guess it just became tradition to give ducks our bread scraps and maybe we didn’t think too much of it- because it always looks as though the ducks are loving the bread! Who doesn’t. But, now that you know better what will you take down to the canal to feed the ducks next time? These watercolour ducks are 100% on the lookout for their five a day!
All paintings are my own designs and therefore completely original.
